Wild Hemp cross-body 'Bhumi' bag
To make the 'Bhumi' crossbody bag we have used wild hemp yarn which has been drawn by tooth and spindle method, where the fibres are separated by teeth and is held on to a hand held spindle. It takes 10 days' work to make one kilogramme of yarn.
The handwoven wild hemp fabric bag is given a modern twist of zipper pockets and clips which have been diverted from the waste stream. The inside lining is stitched and the inside of the strap is also lined for comfort using upcycled fabric.
We have lovingly named this bag 'Bhumi' meaning Earth, in Sanskrit as we hope it gives those who purchase it a deeper sense of connection to the earth and soil. The process of weaving wild hemp is a sustainable and organic method of producing fabric, and the hemp itself is not unearthed, but only the stem is cut, so as not to disturb the soil and enabling the plant to grow back with the next rains.
